Senior honored for first time in his career

VESTAL, N.Y. –  Senior George Kipshidze has been named the SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete in Men's Swimming & Diving for the 2023-24 academic year. The announcement was made by SUNY Chancellor John B. King.

Kipshidze was chosen from among the four Division I SUNY universities (Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo and Stony Brook). Additionally, SUNY selected recipients from its Division III and junior college ranks. A combination of academic and athletic accomplishments were the criteria for selecting each SUNY Scholar Athlete.

Kipshidze capped his Binghamton career by earning all-conference honors at the America East Championships back in February. He was on the first-place 400 free relay team and also placed seventh in the 200 free as the Bearcat men won their second conference title in four years.

In the classroom, Kipshidze was chosen to both the America East All-Academic Team as well as the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.

Also chosen from Binghamton for the recent 2023-24 winter athletic season was men's basketball player Armon Harried.

This marks the second straight year that Binghamton has posted the SUNY Men's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete. Current senior Liam Murphy was the pick last year.

More than 14,000 student-athletes compete at SUNY institutions representing 53 different colleges and universities at the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III/USCAA and NJCAA levels and are eligible for the awards. The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards recognized outstanding academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times a year to coincide with the specific sports contested in the fall, winter and spring seasons. The Scholar Athletes of the Year in each sport will then be nominated for an overall Scholar Athlete of the Year for men's sports and women's sports in each category that will be announced in mid-July.

Back in the fall, graduate student women's soccer player Olivia McKnight and volleyball standout Tsvetelina Ilieva were named SUNY Scholar Athletes. The spring honorees will be announced following the current academic year.

Since the 2003-04 academic year, 85 Binghamton student-athletes across all sports have been named SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athletes.
