Swimming & Diving Sweeps Home Opener Against Niagara

Bearcat men won 175-119, women earn 169-125 victory

VESTAL, N.Y. – Binghamton posted five double-event winners, highlighting its sweep against Niagara in a swimming & diving dual meet on Saturday afternoon at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The men defeated the Purple Eagles 175-119 while the women took a 169-125 decision. The meet was the regular-season home opener for the Bearcats.

"I thought today was great," head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. "We had a lot of energy and the team competed really well. We have been battling sickness and injuries but to see the resilience of our team and to see us competing at a high level was great."

On the women's side, senior Elizabeth Tirado continued her stellar season, sweeping the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 271.95 and 255.90 respectively. In the process, Tirado met the NCAA Zone standard in the one-meter event, marking the second time this season she has met a Zone mark. Tirado hit the NCAA Zone standard in the three-meter competition at Le Moyne two weeks ago.

Other double-event winners on the women's side included senior Maria Pignatelli in the 50 free (24.36) and 100 free (53.34) as well as freshman Julia Iwanow in the 200 breast (2:18.96) and 200 IM (2:10.06). Also capturing women's individual events against Niagara were sophomore Eva Smith in the 100 back (57.42) and junior Haley Nowak in the 100 fly (57.77).

Smith, Iwanow, Nowak and Pignatelli were also part of the first-place 200 medley relay team, which clocked a time of 1:46.36.

Double-event winners on the men's side included sophomore Logan Shriver in the 500 free (4:49.16) and 1,000 free (9:52.53) as well as fellow sophomore Evan Peters in the 200 free (1:42.64) and 200 back (1:52.78).

There were four other individual event winners on the men's side. They include junior Dylan Norby in the three-meter diving event (319.50), freshman Samuel Pikofsky-Christiansen in the one-meter competition (282.83), sophomore Cullin Cole in the 50 free (21.38) and senior Liam Preston in the 100 free (46.94).

Cole and Preston also swam on the first-place 200 free relay team and were joined by freshman Isaih Francis and sophomore Cameron Stetzer. The Bearcat quartet recorded a time of 1:25.01. 

Peters and Francis were part of the winning 200 medley relay team, which also included sophomores Tyler Schultz and Jonah Kirschbaum. Their time was 1:34.19.

Binghamton travels to Bryant for a two-day dual meet next Friday-Saturday.
