Bearcats finish seventh at Carpetbagger Classic; Harrison Blech ties for 22nd

URBANA, Md. – The Binghamton golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring season with a seventh place finish at the Carpetbagger Classic Sunday at Worthington Manor Golf Club.

The Bearcats shot 305-299 = 604/28-over par during the 36-hole tournament. Mount St. Mary's took first place at 293-291 = 584/8-over par.

"Overall, it was an okay weekend," said Binghamton Head Coach Bernie Herceg. "Both days, we started out slow. We got a little bit more consistent as the rounds went on. The last two days, we didn't finish strong in our rounds. Today, our putters let us down. We didn't score too well. We didn't putt too well. Other than that, it was a good event to begin the season for us to get us ready going into April."

Both Harrison Blech and Sean Shen entered the final round in the top 10, with Blech tied for fifth and Shen tied for 10th. However, neither golfer was able to remain in the hunt for medalist honors. Blech finished tied for 22nd at 72-78 = 150/6-over par, while Shen, who competed as an individual, tied for 34th at 73-79 = 152/8-over par.

Ryan Millevoi rose six spots to finish tied for 30th at 77-74 = 151/7-over par. Jackson Vesper shot the lowest round for the Bearcats on Sunday at 73/1-over par, his lowest round relative to par this season. He finished tied for 34th at 79-73 = 152/8-over par.

Lucas Brittain shot the lowest round of his collegiate career Sunday at 75/3-over par to finish tied for 38th at 78-75 = 153/9-over par. Among the golfers tied with Brittain was Brandon Conner, who shot 77-76 = 153/9-over par.

"It's great to have everyone playing the event just to kind of see where their games are at," said Herceg. "We can kind of see what we need to work on in the next 10 days or so here with everybody and where our strengths are, where our weaknesses are and get more prepared throughout the season."

Binghamton's next tournament is the Testudo Cup, which takes place from April 5-6 at The Club at P.B. Dye in Ijamsville, Md.
