TEMPE, Ariz. (binghamtonbearcats.com) - Binghamton Men's Tennis earned two Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Honors, the organization announced Tuesday morning.
The Bearcats received their second consecutive regional Community Service Award while junior Andrew Fang was named the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award winner.
The ITA New England Region Community Service Award is presented annually to the team that demonstrates an exceptional dedication to giving back to the community. Binghamton stood out among dozens of programs for its year-long outreach initiatives, which included organizing tennis clinics for underserved youth, as well as volunteering and partnering with regional nonprofits to promote health and wellness through sport.
The community service nod is the program's fourth in recognition of the team's dedicated and diligent work.
"We have really enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Kings County Tennis League and the New York Junior Tennis League at Cary Leeds over the last few years," said Head Coach Nick Zieziula. "Our players have been able to build great mentoring relationships with young tennis players and we have enjoyed watching the students grow. We also had a great partnership with the Binghamton public schools and we are looking forward to continuing to grow our community partnerships and impact."
Highlighting the individual honors, Fang received the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award, a national recognition named after the legendary Mexican tennis player known for his exceptional character, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit.
This ITA award, which selects one Division I men's student-athlete each year, honors the player who demonstrates many of the key tenets of Osuna's game including, but not limited to, sportsmanship, character, academic achievements, and outstanding tennis accomplishments.
"We are really proud of Andrew and happy to see him get this recognition," Zieziula said. "He is a massive pillar for this program and is totally committed to our team values and leads by example on court off court, in the classroom and in the community. Andrew has a generous heart and is always looking out for others- whether that be teammates, opponents, or community members. His work with at risk youth through several common engagement projects has been inspiring to see."
