Bearcats' tandems shine at unique three-day event that featured youth clinic, club teams

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis kicked off its 2025-26 season with a special three-day, four-team Carousel Classic in the City of Binghamton this weekend and the Bearcats' doubles tandems were sharp.

Binghamton went a combined 9-1 in doubles against Le Moyne, Niagara and Colgate. The Bearcats also went 7-10 in singles. The round-robin format was enhanced by a celebration of sport and community. The Classic, co-hosted by Tennis Charities of Binghamton and Life is Washable, Inc. also featured club sport competition and a youth clinic - all held at the courts at Recreation Park. On Friday, all the participating teams took part in the clinic, with more than 100 students from Horace Mann Elementary School receiving instruction and fellowship from the college student-athletes.

"We had a phenomenal weekend," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "We are really grateful to Jen O'Brien, Life is Washable and Tennis Charities of Binghamton for putting on a great event. We had a blast working with students from Horace Mann and it was great to get in some early season matches. Our doubles performed extremely well and while singles was a bit disappointing ... this was exactly why we wanted to get in an event to get some of the kinks out before our NEC qualifier next weekend."

On the courts, senior James McPherson went a combined 6-1 in singles and doubles to lead the Bearcats' lineup. McPherson went 4-0 in doubles with partners Filipe Costa and Ronin Lotlikar and also won two of his three singles matches. Lotlikar was a combined 5-1, thanks to a perfect 4-0 mark in doubles.

The Bearcats return to action this coming weekend with another multi-team event. Binghamton hosts the NateRentals.com Binghamton Championships up at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center. The event includes many of the Bearcats' Northeast Conference rivals and serves as the qualifier for the ITA Conference Masters Championship, held November 6-9 in San Diego.
