VESTAL, N.Y. -- Host Marist (6-4) scored goals in each half and blanked Binghamton women's soccer 2-0 Friday night from Tenney Stadium. With the loss, the Bearcats (6-3) finished their non-conference schedule and will open America East play Sunday afternoon at Hartford.

The Red Foxes opened the scoring just 2:33 into the contest when junior midfielder Rycke Guiney converted from point-blank range off a deflected shot. Marist then added an insurance goal in the 57th minute when Marjana Maksuti headed a cross off the post and then volleyed in her own rebound.

Marist held a 13-11 edge in shots and also held a wide margin in fouls after being whistled for 23 infractions.

"We made a couple of mistakes but mostly we weren't able to get into a rhythm out there," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "It was a chippy game but I'm proud of the way we competed. Fortunately we are healthy and looking forward to conference play. We'll be ready to go on Sunday."

Junior keepers Carrie Martin and Stephanie Speirs each played one half and made one save.

Binghamton jumps into conference play with an away game at Hartford on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks were picked to finish second in the America East Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Bearcats were selected second-to-last in the nine-team league, despite reaching the conference tournament semifinals four times in the last five years.
