VESTAL, N.Y. -- Host Hartford (5-2-3, 1-0 AE) made good on a penalty kick opportunity with just 4:10 left in regulation to edge Binghamton women's soccer (6-4, 0-1 AE) 1-0 in the America East opener for both teams Sunday afternoon at Al-Marzook Field.

Senior striker Amelia Pereira scored her team-high seventh goal of the season after a tripping call just inside the box went against the Bearcats.

Hartford held an 11-8 shots advantage but put just one strike on goal in the 90 minutes.

"I thought we were controlling much of the game," head coach Sarah McClellan said. "It was a pretty even game and a shame it had to be decided that way. Hartford is a good team and if we can put the same amount of effort and energy into all of our upcoming games we will do very well in conference play. We are looking forward to playing our next conference game at home."

Binghamton hosts New Hampshire on Thursday night.
