Cross country squads compete in season-opening Army tri-meet

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Senior Jeff Martinez was seventh in the men's race and freshman Alexis Hatcher was 26th in the women's race, leading the Binghamton country squads in their season-opening tri-meet against Army and Cornell. The Bearcats placed third in the team standings in both races.

Martinez covered the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:41. Sophomore Jesse Garn was ninth (24:49) and sophomore Matt Johnson was 12th (24:58).

Ben Potts of Cornell captured the race in a time of 24:09.

The Big Red finished with 18 points, following by the host Black Knights with 53 points and Binghamton with 64 points.

Hatcher, meanwhile, completed the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:14. Fellow freshman Lizzie Greiner was 29th.

Katie Kellner of Cornell took top honors in the women's race with a time of 17:02.

Cornell also won the women's meet with a score of 17 points. Army had 42 points and Binghamton finished with 82 points.

Binghamton heads to the Lehigh/Paul Short Run on Sept. 29.
