DeKALB, Ill. - Fourth-seeded Binghamton men's tennis (13-9) suffered a 4-1 loss to top-seeded Western Michigan (19-5) in a Mid-American Conference tournament semifinal match Friday afternoon at Northern Illinois. Western Michigan advances to Saturday's championship match against the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 Buffalo and No. 3 Ball State.
The Broncos captured the doubles point and then picked up wins in three of the first four completed singles matches to clinch the win. The Bearcats were in the midst of two tight, three-set matches at Nos. 3 and 4 singles when the match was halted.
Senior No. 2
Eliott Hureau posted BU's lone win - a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 triumph over Maik Steiner. It was Hureau's 21st win of the season and 67th of his career. He was named to the all-tournament team.Â
In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of senior
Sid Hazarika and freshman
Ludovico Cestarollo gave BU an early lift with a 6-2 win. But WMU countered with wins at Nos. 2 and 3 to grab the doubles point.
Binghamton's season ended after advancing to the MAC tournament for the second straight year. The Bearcats won six of their last seven regular season matches and finished in a tie for runnerup honors before being relegated to the No. 4 seed after a drawn-out seeding process.Â
Hazarika and Hureau will graduate after combining for 135 singles and 123 doubles wins in their four-year careers. The pair helped lead BU to a pair of conference titles and four straight postseason appearances.
