Bearcats rack up six individual titles in final day of the championship

BOSTON, Mass. – Binghamton won six individual titles and placed third overall out of nine teams on both the men's and women's sides, highlighting its performance during the final day of the America East Indoor Championships on Sunday at the Track at New Balance. It marks the second straight top-three performance for both the men's and women's teams at the conference indoor meet.

The men's team, which came into the meet hampered by several key injuries, won three titles on Sunday to finish the meet with five individual crowns. That represents the most individual victories by the Binghamton men's squad at the conference indoor meet since it also won five times in 2008.

The Bearcat women, meanwhile, also won three individual championships on Sunday. In the process, they finished the two-day meet with four individual titles for the second year in a row.

In addition, senior Brandon Love, who won the men's pole vault on Saturday, was named the Men's Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet. It marks the first time a Bearcat has received the men's top field honor at the meet since Joe Miceli in 2017.

"This might be the best overall performance we've had at this meet," head coach Mike Thompson said. "We've had more talented teams in the past but I don't think we've ever had two teams overachieve like this group did this weekend."

On the men's side, seniors Matthew Cavaliere and Marcrene Jeannot each won their first career conference championships on Sunday. Cavaliere won the mile (4:08.46) while Jeannot took top honors in the triple jump (49-0 ¾). It marked the third straight America East indoor meet that Binghamton has won the men's mile (Dan Schaffer was first in 2020 and 2022) but the first time it has ever won the triple jump.

Fellow senior Nick Malfitano won the men's heptathlon with 4,835 points. It was his second career America East championship, having also won the decathlon at the 2022 conference outdoor meet. Malfitano was also third in the men's 60 hurdles on Sunday (8.38).

A pair of Binghamton women also won their first America East titles on Sunday. Senior Sophia Morone captured the 400 (55.31) while sophomore Lucciana Robertson was first in the high jump (5-8).

Junior Jenna Chan, meanwhile, was the lone Bearcat to successfully defend an America East indoor title this year. On Sunday, she was first in the 60 hurdles (8.56).

A trio of Bearcats turned in runner-up finishes on Sunday. They include senior Mark Scanlon in the men's 800 (1:52.77), graduate student Stephanie Cassens in the 500 (1:13.43) and fellow graduate student Aziza Chigatayeva in the 5,000 (9:40.58).

Morone and Cassens also joined senior Serena Gay and sophomore Hillary Abankwa to place second in the 4x400 relay (3:48.61).

All-conference honors were awards to the top three finishers in an individual event as well as all first-place relay teams. Binghamton had eight men's selections and six women's honorees.

Up next for Binghamton is the ECAC/IC4A Championships March 3-5 at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
