VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse coaching staff has a new member as Head Coach Kevin McKeown announced the addition of Rory Thompson as a volunteer assistant Wednesday.
A native of Binghamton, Rory Thompson is the son of longtime Binghamton Head Track & Field Coach Mike Thompson. Rory Thompson returns to the Southern Tier after completing his collegiate lacrosse career at Fairfield.
"We are thrilled to add Rory to our coaching staff," said Binghamton Head Men's Lacrosse Coach Kevin McKeown. "He will bring great energy and enthusiasm on a day-to-day basis. He will raise the level of all areas of our program."
"I am extremely excited and grateful to be a part of Binghamton University's men's lacrosse program," said Thompson. "I am looking forward to learning from Coach McKeown and the rest of the staff, and helping the program any way I can!"
In four seasons with the Stags, Thompson played in 51 games. The defender scored four goals and recorded two assists throughout his career, while also posting 74 ground balls and causing 26 turnovers. In 2025, while serving as a team captain, Thompson helped Fairfield tie its single-season wins record with 12 while also reaching as high as No. 15 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Men's Coaches Division I Poll. At one point, the Stags were the last remaining unbeaten team in the country after starting the season 9-0. Additionally, Fairfield finished a full season undefeated for the first time in program history after going 8-0 on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.
On April 7, Thompson was named Defensive Player of the Week by the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). Playing as a long stick midfielder, Thompson caused four turnovers and collected three ground balls in Fairfield's 14-10 victory over Hofstra on April 5. Fairfield ultimately finished the season ranked 11th in the country in both scoring defense (9.27 goals per game) and man-down defense (.750).
Thompson was also rewarded for his success in the classroom. In 2025, he was named a Scholar All-American by the USILA and was a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection. To be eligible for Scholar All-America, a student-athlete must be a senior or graduate student-athlete with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and be an outstanding contributor on the lacrosse field. Thompson went on to earn his bachelor's degree in sports business.
While competing at Chenango Valley High School, Thompson was named a U.S. Lacrosse All-American and Under Armour Underclass All-American. He led CVHS to a Section 4 championship in 2021. For his high school career, Thompson collected 187 ground balls, caused 61 turnovers, scored 19 goals and recorded 15 assists.
Thompson joins a coaching staff at Binghamton consisting of McKeown and assistants Brandon Myron and Tyler Shoults. The Bearcats made their third appearance in the America East Men's Lacrosse Championship in the last four seasons in 2025, previously qualifying in both 2022 and 2023.
