Hall of Fame
The record-setting 1995 softball team, led by SUNYAC and New York State Coach of the Year Pete Girolamo, is the third women's team enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
Led by a half-dozen all-state players, the team produced a school-record 37 wins (37-8), first SUNYAC championship and NCAA tournament berth, and a final national ranking of No. 10. The team averaged more than six runs a game and doubled the scoring output of his opponents over the full season.
Captained by senior Jill DeVito and juniors Sherri Rogers and Tambi Yu, the squad also included starters Rachel Racibor, Sara Brenner, Charlene Cook, Rhonda Lachut, Michelle Thornton, Katie Peet and Amanda Schilling. The team also received key contributions from Melanie Montenegro, Jocelyn Torres, Becky Gavin, Corrine Forman and Kim Cushman.
On the heels of a strong 29-9 season the previous spring, the 1995 squad took the next step in the form of postseason success. But it began with a regular-season that included 10 consecutive wins to open in March and a school-record 12 straight wins in April.
Next up was the SUNYAC Championship, where the winner earned an automatic bid into the 24-team NCAA Division III tournament. There, BU knocked off two-time defending champion Brockport and twice beat NCAA-bound Buffalo State to win the program's first conference title.
The Colonials received the No. 2 seed at the NCAA East Regional, hosted by top-seeded and national No. 3 ranked Allegheny (Pa.). Two more wins against Buffalo State advanced Binghamton to the championship round, where their storybook season ended with two close losses to the host Gators.
The postseason accolades included all-region selections for Rogers (.353, 31 RBI), Yu (.313, 28 RBI), Brenner (.363, 35 RBI) and Schilling. Joining the quartet as all-stars were DeVito (.360, 39 runs), Racibor (.412, 36 RBI) and Cook.
Schilling (15-2, 2.17 ERA) and Cook (18-6, 2.19 ERA) were a formidable 1-2 force in the circle. Schilling was named ECAC Pitcher of the Year and the freshman and future Hall of Fame selection Cook contributed at the plate as well (.310, 21 RBI).
