A native of Great Neck, N.Y., Avi Shaprut competed in diving at Binghamton from 1990-94. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in biology in 1994 and earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State in 1998.
A two-time All-American, Shaprut earned distinction as the school's first top-eight national diver. As a two-time team captain and MVP, his leadership sparked Binghamton to record-breaking seasons in 1992-93 and 1993-94.
As a junior, Shaprut helped the Colonials go 6-2 in duals and place second at the SUNYAC Championship. In the process he qualified for the national meet on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. At the NCAA Championship in Atlanta, Shaprut totalled 316.65 points on the 1-meter board to place 15th, earning honorable mention All-America status.
In his senior season, Shaprut went undefeated in duals on the 3-meter board, helping Binghamton post a perfect 8-0 season. He established school records on the 1-meter (461.85 points) and 3-meter (503.35 pts.) boards. At the SUNYAC Championship, held in the West Gym Pool, Shaprut earned runnerup honors on both boards as the Colonials won the program's first-ever team title. He then advanced to the NCAA Championship in Williamstown, Mass., where he totalled 371.60 points to place eighth on the 1-meter board. With that performance, Shaprut became the school's inaugural first team All-American diver.
Shaprut was an Academic All-American, ECAC Scholar-Athlete and Dean's List student. He received the department's Foundation Award in 1994 for career achievement, leadership and scholarship.
