A native of West Point, N.Y., Rory Quiller competed in track & field at Binghamton from 2003-08. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2007.

A three-time All-American, Quiller produced the most coveted collegiate achievement when he captured the NCAA pole vault championship at the 2008 indoor meet. In the process, he became the university’s first Division I national champion.

In his freshman year, Quiller won four invitational titles before claiming the first of five career America East pole vault titles with a first-place showing at the indoor championship. Outdoors, he shook off a low seed and placed sixth at the NCAA East Regional in Florida — a harbinger of things to come.

In 2004-05, Quiller repeated as America East indoor champion and became the program’s first NCAA qualifier when he competed at University of Arkansas, placing 12th. The following spring, he was runnerup at the IC4A Championship and then placed fourth at the NCAA East Regional to earn a berth in the NCAA Outdoor Championship, held at Sacramento State.

In 2007, Quiller harnessed a pair of All-America honors, finishing as national runnerup indoors and placing fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Indoors at Arkansas, he cleared a school-record 18-feet-1/2 — the same height as the eventual champion — before settling on second place. Two months later, Quiller capped his outdoor season with titles at the IC4A Championship and NCAA East Regional (meet record 18-feet-1) and then claimed his second All-America honor with a fourth-place showing back in Sacramento.

In his final season of collegiate eligibility in 2008, Quiller was dominant, claiming eight pole vault titles. He cleared a schoolrecord 18-feet-6 1/2 to win the IC4A Championship and then headed to Arkansas as the favorite to win an NCAA championship. Needing to clear the bar on his final attempt to make history, Quiller did just that, returning to campus as a national champion.

He was honored as BU’s “Athlete of the Year” for a record third time and also repeated as America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
